The December issue of "The IPTS Report", the monthly journal of the Institute of Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), is dedicated to the topical issue of food and food safety. Following in the wake of the "mad cow" crisis, and decreasing consumer confidence in food quality and safety, the report provides an opportunity to examine some of the issues raised and the implications for European Union policy in this field. Topics covered include: - Food applications of the new polysaccharides technology; - "Novel foods" regulations: Letting EU consumers know what's on the menu; - From alternative agriculture to the food industry: The need for changes in food policy; - Integrated chain management of food products; - A comparison between functional food markets in the EU, US and Japan; - Nutrition policy as a means of health prevention. Designed to disseminate information about scientific and technological issues which are of interest to policy-makers, "The IPTS Report" is published by IPTS in collaboration with the European Science and Technology Observatory network (ESTO).
