Japan-EU Summit
The seventh Summit meeting between Japan and the European Union took place in Tokyo, Japan, on 12 January 1998. Mr. Ryutaro Hashimoto, Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. Tony Blair, President in Office of the European Council, and Mr. Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission, welcomed the further development of Japan-EU relations since the last Summit meeting in The Hague in 1997 and expressed their commitment to continued cooperation in both the economic and political spheres. Japan-EU cooperation has been developed in a wide variety of areas and both sides expressed their intention to further broaden and deepen their activities. Both sides expressed their intention to further strengthen and enhance their cooperation in such areas as energy, science, research and technology, higher education and contacts between young Japanese and Europeans. They also confirmed their commitment to long-term stable cooperation on the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
