The European Commission, DG XIII, has published a status report on European Telework, "Telework 97", highlighting the activities of the European Community in this field within the context of the Fourth RTD Framework Programme. "Telework 97" provides an overview of the status of telework in the European Union and of related Commission activity. The report focuses on activities undertaken within the ESPRIT (Information Technology), ACTS (Advanced Communications Technologies and Services) and Telematics Applications programmes. It also looks at activities funded by the Social Funds (in particular the ADAPT programme) and the new framework for the development of a Trans-European Telecommunications Network. Following a general introduction, the report includes four main sections with the following objectives: - To set European telework in the context of the emerging global networked economy and the development of a European Information Society; - To review the European telework scene, presenting a representative and balanced picture of what is happening, the opportunities and issues; - To examine the Commission's role and initiatives with regard to European telework, both in relation to its research agenda, as well as to its overall policy frameworks; - To assess the immediate and medium-term future prospects for telework, in particular with regard to policy developments and the market agenda for telework and related tele-activities.
