The European Commission has published a call for applications for funding under the ALURE programme for energy cooperation between the EU and Latin America. The objective of ALURE is to strengthen the EU's economic presence in a vibrant growth sector and equip Latin American institutions and utilities to provide more competitive services. Three specific activities will be supported: - Improving the services of Latin American utilities, preferably in the electricity and natural gas sectors, and to promote business relations with European firms; - Contributing, where necessary, to the adaptation of legal and institutional frameworks; - Promoting sustainable development relevant schemes. Applications for funding should be made by a grouping of at least two EU partners, from at least two Member States, and including at least one partner from a Latin American state. The Community contribution will not exceed 50% of the costs of the project, with a typical Community contribution of between ECU 300,000 and ECU 500,000. The Latin American partners are responsible for ensuring the project's approval by the authorities in those countries. The selection procedure for ALURE is based on three stages and is open all year round. Applicants should submit a project summary on a standard application form which will provide the basis for an initial screening. Selected applicants will then be asked to submit a more detailed proposal. These detailed proposals will then be examined by the advisory committee, in batches received by 30 April and 31 August 1998. The next ALURE call for applications will be published in February 1999.
