A concerted action supported by the European Commission's specific RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurements and Testing (SMT) will aim to achieve mutual acceptance of calibration certificates issued by the National Metrological Institutes (NMIs) of the EU, represented by EUROMET, and the United States of America, represented by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is hoped that the project will provide the technical basis in the metrology field to support the recently signed transatlantic Mutual Recognition Agreement. Removing the requirement for calibrations by NIST for European laboratories whose measurements are already traceable to a European NMI would greatly benefit European industry. Likewise, American exporters would no longer have to face the current confusion caused by different requirements relating to calibration in the various Member States.
