The International Association for the Promotion of Cooperation with Scientists from the New Independent States (NIS) of the former Soviet Union (INTAS) has recently announced a call for proposals for INTAS fellowships and conference grants. INTAS supports the consolidation of NIS science by the setting up of long-lasting scientific partnerships between scientists from the INTAS member states and the NIS. Given the recent decline in the number of young researchers working in the NIS, INTAS has identified the need to support young scientists in these countries and to provide incentives for them to remain in science. The support offered by INTAS will take two forms: - INTAS Fellowships: Young scientists involved in terminating or recently completed INTAS projects (up to six months) will be given the opportunity to continue their research, particularly when this is in pursuit of research qualifications started during the period of an INTAS project. Fellowships of up to one year may include a three-month training period in the institute of an INTAS project participant. Applicants may request up to ECU 3,500. - INTAS Conference Grants: Young scientists having achieved excellent results within INTAS projects will be given the opportunity to attend conferences/workshops in the NIS, or in an INTAS member state, in order to present their results and to enhance their reputation. In addition, successful applicants may apply for a period of brief training in the same country. The financial support shall cover basic expenses (e.g. costs for travel, subsistence, conference fees). Applicants may request grants of up to ECU 1,000. Applicants for INTAS support must be: - Holders of a degree or equivalent from an NIS university or similar institution; - 35 years of age or less; - A citizen and resident of one of the NIS countries; - Involved in an ongoing or recently finished INTAS project. The relevant applications forms may be obtained from: INTAS 58 Avenue des Arts, Box 8 B-1000 Brussels Fax +32-2-5490156 E-mail: young-scientist@intas.be
