A new report under the ESPRIT basic research series entitled "Biomechanical models for soft tissue simulation", has recently been published. Launched in November 1993, the CHARM project (A Comprehensive Human Animation Resource Model) aimed to develop a comprehensive human resource database and set of software tools allowing the modelling of the complex human musculoskeletal system and the simulation of its dynamics. The report provides an overview of the available models in the light of theoretical mechanics and finite element methods, for the realistic simulation of the human muscles, tendons and skin.
