The BEG-Net (La Banque Europèenne des Glomales) project, a concerted action supported by the EU's Biotechnology programme, aims to develop a collaborative network of laboratories working on a specific group of symbiotic fungi. The overall objective of the BEG-net action is: - To register cultures of AMF (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) in the BEG database, which should be available on the Internet within the project's first year; - To maintain living cultures and to make some of the most frequently used available to researchers; - To produce a second version of a demonstration Expert System on CD-ROM, to aid identification, teaching and awareness of 30 or more species of these fungi; - To incorporate new information into the on-line BEG database; - To aid the training and mobility of young scientists, involving several short inter-laboratory visits by young research scientists.
