MOTIVATE (Mobile Television and Innovative Receivers) is an ACTS project (Advanced Communication, Technologies and Services programme) selected following the third call, and due to start on 1 May 1998. It builds on the previous project VALIDATE, which successfully verified the DVB specification for terrestrial broadcast. MOTIVATE will investigate the mobile and portable reception of digital terrestrial television in single frequency and multi-frequency networks. DVB-T provides an independent standard for data and multimedia broadcasting. The project MOTIVATE aims to prove that the DVB-T standard provides all the facilities and flexibility needed for mobile reception. Implementation guidelines for setting up mobile DVB-T services could become a key result of the MOTIVATE project. Other aims of the project include: - The specification of the requirements of a reference receiver model for mobile reception; - The study, implementation and testing of improved receiver algorithms for mobile reception; - To optimize the receiver performance for portable and mobile reception; - The specification of a minimal set of performance parameters which are necessary to obtain a certain service quality with a certain type of receiver; - The promotion of the DVB-T implementation in countries outside Europe. It is hoped that the results of the ACTS projects which work on DVB-T, particularly MOTIVATE and VALIDATE programmes can be presented through a technical demonstration at IBC'98.
