The tenth EU Young Scientists Contest is to be held in Porto, Portugal, from 21 to 26 September 1998. The annual contest is organized by the European Community's Training and Mobility of Researchers (TMR) programme, with the host national organizer providing the venue and additional sponsorship. The EU contest brings together the winners of national competitions in 30 countries, including the EU's 15 Member States, the Associated States, Central and Eastern European countries, Russia and Ukraine. It comprises a three-day science fair, at which the contestants exhibit their projects, followed by a prize-giving day. There are three first prizes of ECU 5,000, three second prizes of ECU 3,000 and six third prizes of ECU 1,500. In addition, honorary awards may be granted to enable one prize-winner to attend the Nobel Prize ceremony in Stockholm, one individual to attend the Science Festival in London, and up to three teams to attend the International Science and Engineering Fair in the US. This will give the young prize-winners the opportunity to meet with eminent scientists to discuss their projects. The objectives of the EU contest include: - To identify and encourage strong scientific talent; - To provide a stimulus for the development of the most promising young scientists in Europe; - To promote a spirit of innovation and interchange between young scientists. A jury of leading scientists, representing a variety of disciplines are nominated by the Commission. The jury president in 1998 will be Professor Pedro Guerreiro of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The projects are assessed using the following criteria: - Originality and creativity in the identification of and the approach to the basic problem; - Skill, care and thoroughness in designing and carrying out the research; - Follow-through of the study from conception to conclusion; - Reasoning and clarity in the interpretation of results; - Quality of written presentation and ability to discuss the project with the jury members.
