Project description
Network of the Future
The project SPARC "Split architecture carrier grade networks" is aimed at the investigation and implementation of a new split in the architecture of the Future Internet and its building blocks. The design of the new architecture will focus on the split of control, forwarding and data processing elements. The objective of the Split Architecture is a modularisation of logical and physical functionality in order to manage complexity. Split Architecture will have a particular impact on the following areas: (1) Separate optimisation of network and functional building blocks, e.g. application modules, controller software, forwarding engine(2) Reduce dependencies on legacy protocols and design principles(3) Lower market entry barriers (4) Increase market volumes of modules.Carrier network requirements, architecture and related business scenarios will be investigated and evaluated. Based on the result, the key functionalities of controller and network application software will be specified. Unique for the SPARC project is the implementation of scalable carrier class functionalities based on extended OpenFlow concept and practical assessment of them. The proposed concept will accelerate the adoption by supporting interoperability of Future Internet domains with the existing infrastructure. Beyond the typical means of dissemination of EU projects, the prototype will be demonstrated at selected international events with high industry awareness.
