The race is on to develop safer and lighter aircraft structures. The main hurdle in their development is that they have to be integrated at the design phase. Modern advances in technology help this and tools developed for topology optimisation support these early, important decisions by suggesting optimal material distributions. PLATO-N aimed to help enable the operational integration of optimisation assistance as a standard procedure in the conceptual design process for the European aerospace industry. Their final report details the aims and objectives of their project and lists published articles that were produced as part of the project.
