A successful European public-public partnership - the European Metrology Research Programme

[Date: 2012-04-19]

This week, the European Commission highlighted the achievements of the European Metrology Research Programme (EMRP), an initiative that started 3 years ago.

Since 2009, metrology research in Europe has been jointly addressed, financed and researched by 22 European countries and the EU in a joint programme, implemented by EURAMET e.V. The EMRP fosters collaboration between European metrology institutes, industrial organisations and academia on joint research projects within specified fields.

The EMRP was started as a response to needs that were independent of national metrology activities, and now those initial needs have been met. The EMRP has been able to pool excellence in metrology research and engage in capacity building. Interaction with the wider scientific community and and further researcher mobility is expected in the remaining years of the programme.

The Commission shares the expert panel view, chaired by Ms. Pia Locatelli, former Member of the European Parliament, that the EMRP has transformed a specialised and fragmented community into a successful public-public partnership confirming the advantages of the European Research Area.

The Commission will therefore continue to support the current programme as foreseen in the Decision from 2009 between the European Parliament and Council.
