Contact printing of electronics and opto-electronics

Objective

Organic electronics is amongst the most exciting technologies to emerge over the last decade, and Europe is at the forefront. To ensure that Europe remains a leader, scientific advances must be brought into an industrial environment where issues such as adaptability to the market, cost, throughput and variability are addressed. CONTACT brings together a diverse team of researchers and engineers to develop a flexible and industrially compatible process for the fabrication of organic electronic arrays, by investigating gravure printing of the various components within the device. We will build on the existing excellence in the science of these materials in Europe and the highly specialized expertise within the European printing industry to formulate suitable materials and substrates, and modify test printers.

The potential of our results will be demonstrated as a proof of principle by the realization of two test displays, namely an optical triple-cell liquid-crystal display (LCD), and an all-plastic LCD. A forum will create a mechanism for exchanging information between printing pioneers and veterans, as well as imaginative market experts. CONTACT will deliver a horizontal platform that allows the fabrication of a range of devices, from transistors to solar cells, sensors, light-emitting diodes and plastic displays. This will provide a significant enhancement of thin-film electronics in terms of cost, throughput, substrate choice and consistency, and reduce time to market as well as developing European precursor markets.
