1. Always horizontal (equalizing system for stabilising the horizontal position of objects aboard a ship)

A Cypriot inventor developed a mechanism that eliminates the uncomfortable effect on objects aboard the ship by stabilising their horizontal position. A frequent problem encountered in cruising ships is the effect on passengers and objects aboard the ship, due to the inclination that a ship can undergo. The equalising system can be installed underneath any object and stabilises its horizontal position. ... (read more)

2. ASMOS: advanced surface modelling system

Three dimensional object reconstruction is achieved in such a way that a 4D-laser (x,y,z,intensity) mapper (4D-LM) synchronously samples Cartesian coordinates of the target's surface and their reflected laser intensity (4D). The geometry and topology of the sculptured surface is then described. The transformed data can be used by standard interfaces (eg VDAFS, IGES and STEP) and linked to CAD/CAM and CAP ... (read more)

8. Rotary anaerobic processing of agricultural and municipal wastes with the production of organic fertiliser and recycled solid fuel

Rotary Anaerobic Digestion (RAD) is based on the natural degradation process that occurs in landfills.

In the absence of oxygen, a uniquely designed rotating digester (drum) ensures the degradation of organic material and sewage sludge. Further processing and stabilization in a secondary rotating drum produces either premium quality compost or recycled fuel.

The digester may process municipal solid waste, ... (read more)

9. System of MRI guided high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) surgery

MEDSONIC LTD which was founded in 2005 produces high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) systems guided by MRI for surgical applications. HIFU is the only thermal modality that can access deep-seated tumors. The guidance by MRI offers the best contrast between normal and necrotic tissue. The first product will focus in the ultrasound ablation of brain tumors, whereas the second product will focus in the ... (read more)

10. New/improved catalyst for tar (phenol) reforming/ cracking

A novel Rh-based supported catalyst for phenol steam reforming has been synthesized using the Sol-Gel method. It was found that the Sol-Gel method results in a significant improvement of the catalyst behaviour with respect to that obtained by other traditional synthesis techniques (e.g., wet impregnation).

The Rh-based supported catalyst has been tested for the steam reforming of phenol in the 575-730oC ... (read more)

11. Quantification of biomass potential in 10 newly elected to Europe countries

The biomass potential in the 10 newly elected countries (alphabetically: Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, and Slovenia) was quantified. Bulgaria, Romania, and Turkey were also included in the overview.

The potential was estimated by terms of annual dry available quantities (tn/yr) and amounts of thermal energy (GWhth) that could annually be saved from ... (read more)

12. Use of steady state thermodynamic simulator to estimate the behaviour of the exit gas (after gasifier of the bioHPR concept) through possible cleaning devices before entering the microturbine

Aspects of the hot gas cleaning system for large-scale applications of the bioHPR reactor concept were investigated with the aim to outline the solution of this problem rather than provide a complete solution. Product gas contaminants and their concentrations limits prior to utilisation are discussed. Data form literature along data from BioHPR prototypes are presented.

A short review of hot gas cleaning ... (read more)

13. Extraction of phosphorus and metal contaminants from aged commercial three-way catalysts by using weak organic acid solutions

The developed procedure consists of the use of weak organic acid solutions (citric, oxalic acid) at a low temperature (T=50ºC) to remove phosphorous and other metal contaminants (e.g., Pb, Fe, Cu, Ni, Cr) from a commercial TWC.

The potential application of the described process is to permit the extraction of metal poisons from aged three-way catalytic converters in an easy and cheap way, and also from ... (read more)

14. A catalogue of computee profiles

A suite of different behaviour profiles for computes is defined and studied with respect to their suitability under different conditions of the environment in which the computes operate.

The aim is then to identify a correspondence between profiles of computes and application domains for which the operation of the computes will be more successful. ... (read more)

15. Declarative, flexible, adaptable and verifiable agent control via preferential reasoning

In this work, we extend the architecture of agents based upon fixed, one-size-fits-all cycles of operation, by providing a framework of declarative specification of agents control.

Control is given in terms of cycle theories, which define in a declarative way the possible alternative behaviours of agents depending on the particular circumstances of the (perceived) external environment in which they are ... (read more)
