Highly efficient biological waste decomposition and humification

Abstract:

A Slovenian company has developed a highly efficient humification of all kinds of biological sludge. The process is technically undemanding & can be easily adapted. In the process the sludge reduces its volume, looses unpleasant smell and is pasteurised. The final product is highly active organic fertiliser which can be used for preparation of the vegetable growth substrates. The company is interested in licensing, joint venture, manufacturing, commercial, technical or other types of agreements.

In the waste water treatment plants a lot of side product in the form of sludge is produced. High volumes of such sludge represent a physical and financial burden to the companies. Its composition of carbohydrates, proteins and fats allows for biological and chemical transformation through decompositions and synthesis. The process presented employs fermentation, ammonification and saponification in aerobic conditions with a long thermophilic phase at temperatures higher than 70°C. In the designed process the final product is completely free of pathogenic organisms.

In the first, acidic phase, the decomposition of proteins and construction of ammonia occurs (needed for further processing). All phases take place in time sequences (depending on the composition of the reactive heap) and gradually lead to a perfect maturity. The mesophilic phase is short. The requested temperature of 38°C is achieved not later than 17 hours from the beginning of the process. This means that on the second day the process already moves to the thermophilic state.

The procedure and the mixture of the micro-organisms population was specially designed to achieve rapid and efficient decomposition of the organic compounds

The process does not require any external source of heat and it does not require aeration.

Advantages:
The designed procedures for decomposition with micro-organisms are superior to the current technology in this field:
- The process is thorough and much faster than the conventional ones, it also significantly reduces expenses of decomposition of the sludge,
- The final product of the process is highly profitable organic fertiliser that is easily applicable also on large surfaces with existent mechanisation,
- Higher level of volatile (organic) solids degradation is possible in the same or shorter retention time,
- Ammonia is removed in sludge digestion,
- Final product of humification is a highly active and pasteurised humus concentrate – organic fertiliser.

Innovative Aspects:

The use of selected strains (culture) of micro-organism enables quick and efficient decomposition and humification of any kind of biological sludge and organic solids.
