Development and Manufacturing of a newly designed Rotational Dobby Mechanism for Weaving Machine

Abstract:

A Turkish university has developed a new Rotational Dobby Mechanism for weaving machines. The new dobby mechanism has been designed to manage high-speed motion without entailing a high level of working noise and also high production costs. The company is seeking for a technical co-operation agreement. Partner(s) should be involved in machine manufacturing and research; preferably in textile machinery.

The aim of the project is the study, development, and manufacturing of the newly designed and constructed rotational dobby mechanism. The new dobby mechanism has been designed to manage high-speed motion without entailing a high level of working noise and also high production costs. The main difference of the new design from other well-known dobby mechanisms is the absence of any reciprocating knife-hook pair in the mechanism.

Dobby mechanisms are used to control elevation of frames that designate directly the warp motion and indirectly the structure of fabric on some type of weaving machines. The new mechanism is an electronically controlled, middle-closed, and positive-driven dobby construction utilised with sixteen harnesses. Nominal work speed of the mechanism has been reached up to 500 rpm. The noise level of the mechanism is also lower than other current mechanisms without causing a high level of manufacturing and maintenance costs.

Innovative Aspects:

During production of this dobby standard bearings and control units have been used (using special bearings and control units increase the unit costs).
With the increase of the numbers of moving parts the stability of the mechanism is decreasing. Considering this fact during designing two times less moving parts than the current dobbies have been used in this dobby.

Main advantages of the new dobby mechanism are:
- Easy and cheap maintenance
- Lower sale price than the current dobbies in the market (about 1/3)
- Easy market penetration in the local weaving sector

The newly designed rotational dobby mechanism is quite appropriate to be used on old-fashioned weaving machines. Estimated sale price and mechanical properties of the dobby perfectly fit the requirements of the weaving sector. Sale prices of the dobbies in the market is currently between 10.000-15.000 Euros, which is expensive for some weavers, although estimated sale price of the new dobby mechanism is about 5.000 - 6.500 Euros, which makes it possible to be used commonly on the old-fashioned looms.

Market Applications:

Textiles, clothing; Metal products (ferrous, nonferrous)

Stage of Development:

Experimental development stage (laboratory prototype)

Property Rights:

Patent(s) granted, Secret know-how

Patent Details:

- Current Stage of Development:
Development phase - Laboratory tested

A unique rotational dobby mechanism is already built up. It is currently ready for demonstration and field test. All mechanical and electronical parts of the dobby are installed as a whole body. It is ready for use on a weaving machine to maintain the opening motion of the weaving procedure.

- Intellectual Property Rights:
Patent(s) granted

The main working principle of the dobby is based on a patent that belongs to Abdullayev G., Petrova T., Former Soviet Union (CCCP) patent number: 1381208.MKI.D03 D/1/100, 1988. Adding to this principal patent, patent application of the unique rotational dobby mechanism is already completed by TUBITAK as result of a MISAG project.

- Exploitation of RTD Results:
NATIONAL PROG.

Collaboration Sought:

Licence agreement,Information exchange/Training,Other,Joint further development,Testing of new applications,Adaptation to specific needs

Collaboration Detail:

- Type of partner sought:
Industry

- Specific area of activity of the partner:
Textile sector

- Task to be performed:
The company is seeking a technical co-operation agreement. Partner(s) should be involved in machine manufacturing and research, preferably in textile machinery. The dobby mechanism needs to be modified considering it is machine size and function of mechanical elements. Partner should have enough experience in manufacturing and technical cooperation.
