Abstract: The Compressed Editing Toolkit is designed as Software Development Kit to provide the VIZARD application components VExplorer, VAnnotator, and VPublisher with basic functions to process MPEG-2 Streams in the Compressed Domain.
The main advantages of the CET concern the improvement of MPEG-2 compressed source material in terms of performance and quality. The MPEG-2 smart encoding features are really important and helpful for professional end-users in that purpose, and will be influence other user groups increasingly, taken into account that MPEG-2 is probably becoming a new consumer format.
The potentials for processing MPEG-2 in the compressed domain avoids time-consuming and processor intensive recoding during rendering in a way that most of the rendering can be reduced to copy operations. The implemented smart rendering features prevent encoding and decoding in a way without loosing quality of video source material.
The integrated scene cut detection algorithms were developed and implemented with time-spending effects, and as quality preservation effort. The CET provides as Toolkit general MPEG-2 support functions key frame grabbing incl. optimised scaling as well as seeking, playback.
The CET is designed as SDK in a general manner that is compliant to DirectShow's COM based infrastructure and programming model and is therefore usable as integrated as well as as standalone Software. There exist two optional usable Versions of the CET, one as SDK-Installer including several utilities and samples, the CET Demo-Player, headers and documentations. The other one is a runtime-only package for integration into the VIZARD-Installer.

MPEG-2 is one of the upcoming formats within the video market, related both to professional users whose work depends on high quality source material as well as on consumer markets that are oriented towards spending further creativeness in effective and efficient video processing procedures. The ongoing and increasing distribution of high-quality compressed formats, like MPEG-2, will continue the necessity of editing, processing, and publishing tools that are able to handle such formats.
This makes the CET attractive for all VIZARD dissemination activities as well as for usage as SDK within all Next Generation Video Publishing Tools. The CET is designed as SDK in a general manner that is compliant to DirectShow's COM based infrastructure and programming model offers the way of its easy flexible integration and usage.
We are highly interested in further collaboration with commercial and scientific partners willing to further investigate our innovative approach, handling compressed formats in a quality and time-saving manner. As proven by the VIZARD product, the integration of the CET SDK will be attractive for any video processing and publishing market in terms of quality and performance.
There are further open investigations to improve and enhance the Compressed Editing Toolkit, in particular in variants of editing compressed video formats in different quality. In this field we are interested in further research collaboration with industry and universities. Furthermore we are looking for partners who may act as sales points to market and distribute the Compressed Editing Toolkit as well as standalone SDK as innovative part of New Generation Video Publishing Tools it in the worldwide market.
