The CORDIS - United Kingdom Council Presidency RTD Information Service was created to help you keep up-to-date on important developments taking place in the area of research and technological development (RTD) during the United Kingdom's (UK) term as the EU Council President, 1 January - 30 June 1998. The service was developed jointly by CORDIS and the UK Office of Science and Technology (OST), part of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The service is designed to help broaden your understanding of the many R&D activities and initiatives supported by the EU and implemented in the Member States. The service helps you easily access timely information on the range of current Council policy issues, as well as research and related developments in the UK during the course of the Presidency. Updated weekly and available in English, French and German, the CORDIS - United Kingdom Council Presidency RTD Information Service also features an on-line Press Service which reports the latest news on RTD issues, activities and decisions within the UK during the six-month Presidency. Special coverage keeps you informed: The new service features information on the following areas: - Council Presidency R&D Activities; - UK R&D and Key Events; - R&D in the UK; - UK Participation in EU R&D; - Key Contacts; - Useful Internet Links. In the text (TXT) field of this News article, we present a selection of case studies which illustrate how researchers in the UK are benefitting from the EU's research programmes. These show the many and varied areas in which UK organizations are involved as well as the range of different types of organization participating. What's new? Among the major items which have recently gone on-line on the UK Presidency R&D Information Service are: - A report on the Ministerial Colloquium on programme management held in London on 28 April 1998; - The CREST Working Group reports prepared for the colloquium, the first time such reports have been made publicly available in this way; - The full text of the Council's common position on the upcoming Fifth RTD Framework Programme, adopted on 12 February 1998; - An interview with Eryl McNally, a key British Member of the European Parliament's Research Committee. Coming attractions: In the next couple of months, further key information due to be published on the Service will include: - A report on the "Industry-Academic Links: Innovative Partnerships for Competitiveness" conference, held in Coventry on 14 and 15 May 1998; - Details of the Research Council Meeting on 22 June 1998, when Ministers are expected to hold their first in-depth discussions on the proposed specific programmes within the Fifth Framework Programme; - An interview with Adair Turner, Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry; - The information on UK participation in EU research programmes is regularly updated, and details of the results of the final calls under the Fourth Framework Programme are now coming on-stream. CORDIS and the EU Council Presidencies: - A continuing collaboration of transparency and openness The CORDIS - UK Council Presidency RTD Information Service is the fourth in the series of Presidency services, following those of the Irish, Dutch and Luxembourg Presidencies, respectively. The EU Council Presidency rotates between the Member States every six months: January until June, July until December. The CORDIS Council Presidency Service was initiated under the Irish Council Presidency from 1 July 1996 - 31 December 1996. The current UK Service will be followed by the Austrian Council Presidency RTD Information Service from 1 July 1998 - 31 December 1998.
