The European Commission, DG III, has released the results of the sixth, seventh, and eighth calls for proposals under the specific RTD programme in the field of Information Technologies (ESPRIT). A total of 824 proposals were submitted under the sixth call for proposals, published on 15 March 1996 (OJ No S 53 of 15.3.1996 p. 36), requesting total funding of ECU 574.25 million. Of these, 224 proposals were selected, and will receive total funding of ECU 157.06 million, distributed across the following domains: - Software technologies (129 projects); - Technologies for components and subsystems (29); - Multimedia systems (9); - Long-term research (12); - Open microprocessor systems initiative (10); - High-performance computing and networking (10); - Technologies for business processes (13); - Integration in manufacturing (12). Under the seventh call for proposals, published on 17 September 1996 (OJ No S 180 of 17.9.1996 p.42) a total of 1,054 proposals were submitted, requesting total funding of ECU 1,212.55 million. Of these, 307 proposals were selected, receiving a total of ECU 312.75 million, spread across the following domains: - Software technologies (31); - Technologies for components and subsystems (54); - Multimedia systems (17); - Long-term research (45); - Open microprocessor systems initiative (18); - High-performance computing and networking (84); - Technologies for business processes (31); - Integration in manufacturing (27). Under the eighth call for proposals, published on 15 March 1997 (OJ No C 84 of 15.5.1997 p. 15), a total of 693 proposals were submitted, requesting total funding of ECU 785.34 million. Of these, 205 proposals were selected, receiving total funding of ECU 205.22 million, distributed across the following domains: - F1 (1); - Technologies for components and subsystems (12); - Multimedia systems (4); - Long-term research (17); - Open microprocessor systems initiative (12); - High-performance computing and networking (75); - Technologies for business processes (26); - Integration in manufacturing (11); - IT for mobility (15); - Electronic commerce (32). More than 50% of proposals in response to each call were from industry. Universities formed the next largest grouping, with proposals also coming from research institutes and public sector bodies.
