The preliminary results of the sixth and final call for proposals under the EU's agriculture and fisheries research programme (FAIR) have recently been released. A total of 469 proposals were submitted in response to a targeted call for Areas 3, 4 and 5 of the programme which was published on 15 October 1997 and closed on 16 January 1998. These areas cover: - Generic science and advanced technologies for nutritious foods; - Agriculture, forestry and rural development; - Fisheries and aquaculture. The proposals, which are currently being evaluated, are made up of Shared Cost Actions (77%), Concerted Actions (18%) and Demonstration (5%). In addition, 167 proposals received under the last selection deadline (17 December 1997) for FAIR research training grants, as well as 40 FAIR cooperative research proposals covering all the research areas of the programme submitted for the same deadline, are also currently being evaluated. With regard to the joint call for proposals (29 April 1997) on transmissible spongiforme encephalophaties (TSE) under the FAIR, Biomedicine and Health and Biotechnology research programmes, a total of 22 research proposals have been retained.
