The results of the final call for proposals under the EU's RTD programme in the field of Standards, Measurement and Testing are now available. The call was published on 17 June 1997 and closed on 27 November 1997 (OJ No C 183, p. 16). It dealt with Theme II (Written standards and technical support to trade) and Theme III (Measurements related to the needs of society) of the programme. The call focused on European measurement and testing infrastructure, support to the needs of custom laboratories, novel calibration tools (including certified reference materials), health and safety, environmental monitoring and the protection of cultural heritage and justice system. A total of 279 proposals were received by the deadline, of which 14 were considered ineligible. The total cost of the eligible proposals was ECU 206.4 million, the total contribution requested from the Commission being ECU 140.1 million. Examples of proposals selected under each of the categories include: - Traceability and mutual recognition of impulse voltage measurements (Theme II); - Diagnostic protocols for organisms harmful to plants (Theme III); - Fibre optics technology network (Thematic network); - Information system and qualifying criteria for proficiency testing (Concerted action); - Workshop on quality management in analytical chemical research and development (Accompanying measure).
