A new European Masters degree course on the archaeology and dynamics of writing has recently been approved by the European Commission, the organisation of which will be financed within the EU's SOCRATES action programme in the field of education and training. Up to 25 postgraduate students will be admitted to the course, provided they hold a university degree, understand both English and French, have a basic knowledge of computer science and an interest in interactive teaching methods. The degree will be based on the theoretical and practical interdisciplinary study of the written expression in its various forms, and in terms of its technical, formal, historical, cultural, linguistic and functional aspects. The course will cover human sciences, linguistics, computer sciences, social sciences, communication and didactic areas. The following subjects will be examined as part of the degree course: - Theory of writing: anthropology, semiotics and philosophy; - Writing in different cultures and the history of writing including oriental and classical antiquity, modern Europe and the colonial world; - Non alphabetic and mixed writing systems; - Language, writing, didactics, communication and publicity; - Psychology of written production; - The science of informatics.
