The proceedings of a workshop on the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in the study of ancient landscapes and features related to ancient land use, held in Ljubljana, Slovenia, on 27 April 1996, have recently been published by the European Commission, DG XII. The workshop was held within the framework of COST Action G2. The publication contains the texts of nearly all the presentations delivered during the conference. The topics covered include: - Applications of GIS to the archaeology of Roman Hispania; - GIS-based analysis of ancient land division in Corinthia, Greece; - The past, present and future of GIS-based cultural landscape research; - Ancient and contemporary land use in West Achaia, Peleponessus, Greece - a GIS application; - GIS in on-site analysis: Rodik, Slovenia; - Modelling erosion and deposition with GIS; - Down to the millimetre - GIS in the metrological study of ancient land divisions; - Mathematical detection of patterns in ancient landscape.
