At the invitation of Mrs. Edith Cresson, Commissioner for research, education and training, four university rectors from Bosnia-Herzegovina were in Brussels on 26-27 June 1996 to discuss implementing the Community's TEMPUS programme for cooperation with third countries in the field of higher education. The aim of the meeting between the university rectors and Commission staff was to draw up a calendar of preparatory measures prior to the opening of a TEMPUS office in Sarajevo, and to draw up priorities (rectors' conference, equipment, appropriate curricula, teacher training, etc.) under the TEMPUS programme for implementation in 1997-1998. Mrs. Cresson underlined the importance of education in the rebuilding of the country and the need for reinforced links between the European Union and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
