COST (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific and Technical Research) was set up in 1971 to stimulate and provide a framework for European cooperation in the field of science and technology. Not included in the initial range of actions covered by COST, COST Chemistry was only set up in 1991. It was immediately welcomed by the scientists concerned, showing the need for research cooperation and coordination in this domain. Since the beginning, COST Chemistry has proven very successful, with 22 COST countries currently participating in COST Chemistry Actions. Over 120 projects have been supported, involving more than 600 research groups in collaborative programmes. The total budget involved in collaborative research in COST Chemistry has been estimated at approximately ECU 300 million. A Home Page providing detailed information on the COST Chemistry Actions has recently been set up on the World Wide Web. This offers a general introduction to the sector, a "What's New" section featuring updates on the latest sector news, detailed information on 12 COST Chemistry Actions currently underway, as well as guidelines for the preparation of proposals.
