The first ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) networking link between Ukraine and the European Union has recently operated successfully between Kiev and Turin, Italy. The link was developed with the support of the NICE project, which was part of the Advanced Communications, Technologies and Services (ACTS) and International Co-operation (INCO) programmes. The NICE project (National Host Interconnection Experiments) facilitated the mounting of distributed broadband applications on an ATM infrastructure. Experiments such as this have helped to ensure the effective transfer of practical knowledge and experience of broadband applications to Eastern Europe and aim to create a basis for future collaboration between researchers in the EU and in Central and Eastern Europe. They also help to promote the use of common technologies and standards between telecommunications operators in the EU and in Eastern Europe. Commercial exploitation of the project's service platforms would provide a basis for geographically dispersed teams to participate in tele-meetings or panel discussions, to undertake software demonstrations, make audio/visual or more technical presentations, and even to conduct shared experiments.
