Diagnostics refers to the tools and technologies used in early diagnosis of disease, monitoring of disease progression and response to therapy. Use of diagnostic methods can greatly increase the effectiveness of therapy. Research into new diagnostics formed part of the EU's Sixth Framework Programme (2002-2006) and the purpose of this catalogue is to demonstrate the activities started over the duration of the programme and the initial results obtained. Diagnostics research involves many disciplines, including molecular biology, physiology, biomedical engineering and information technology, where new research is opening up exciting opportunities, and is a particularly active area for industry, especially SMEs.
