The European Atomic Energy Community's Sixth Framework Programme for research and training activities (Euratom FP6, 2002-06) was a collection of actions at EU level to fund and promote nuclear energy research. The programme is finished and succeeded by Euratom FP7, 2007-11. Results of completed FP6 projects are available in the Library, which is updated regularly.

In order to fulfil the objectives for nuclear research and training activities as set out in the Euratom Treaty and to contribute to the establishment of the European Research Area, Euratom FP6 was structured into three thematic priorities - fusion energy research, management of radioactive waste, and radiation protection - and the research area other activities in the field of nuclear technologies and safety.

Research in Euratom FP6 was funded under two specific programmes: one for research and training in nuclear energy implemented through indirect actions and one for research and training implemented by direct actions, carried out by the Joint Research Centre (JRC). This site concerns only indirect actions, i.e. research projects managed by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Research.

The thematic priorities and instruments covered in FP6 are explained in the annual work programmes and in the leaflets on the launch of Euratom FP6 in nuclear fission and radiation protection.

The research budget for nuclear fission and radiation protection, including other activities, was EUR 190 million for the FP6 period 2002-06. A general breakdown is given in the box to the right.

Information on projects funded in this area can be found on the Find a Project page, where you can browse projects using the 'Activity Areas' search option.
