Creating prototype professional multimedia search engines
VITALAS is working on developing a prototype search engine for un-indexed professional multimedia archives. VITALAS will provide advanced solutions for cross-media indexing, searching and accessing content that was not, or was only partly, annotated. The system can form the core of public multimedia content search engines, such as those of major news agencies. The EU-funded project is working on intelligent visualisation techniques for smart content navigation and consumption. VITALAS has already succeeded in creating its first complete application for the French and Belgian news agencies AFP and Belga.

Web-searching tools to help product designers keep up with the very latest trends
TRENDS – which brings together industrial and academic partners from four countries – is developing interactive software for product designers in a range of markets, from automobiles to equipment. This three-year EU-funded project will demonstrate its third prototype which weaves together all the components developed so far. The TRENDS content-based information retrieval system improves designers’ access to web-based information by helping them to find appropriate materials, such as images, and identify design trends in different areas. The software partly digitises a hitherto manual process. Three innovative technologies were integrated: ‘meta’ searching, semantic multimedia searching and automatic image analysis.
