Background
International cooperation becomes a must to address global challenges and to build win-win partnerships with well-targeted countries for technology, economic and social developments.
In the ICT Programme international cooperation aims to support European competitiveness and to jointly address, with other regions of the world, issues of common interest and mutual benefit, thereby supporting also other EU policies (sustainable development, environmental protection, disaster response, security, etc).
International cooperation activities the ICT Work Programme 2011-2012 have three main objectives:
- To jointly respond to major global technological challenges by developing interoperable solutions and standards
- To jointly develop ICT solutions to major global societal challenges
- To improve scientific and technological cooperation for mutual benefit
The ICT Work Programme 2011-12 includes priorities for coordinated calls for international cooperation with Brazil and Russia, as well as a set of targeted opening in areas throughout the Challenges and FET.
The EU also supports international research infrastructures and networking, centered around GEANT - a multi-gigabit pan-European research and education network linked to similar networks in other regions of the world.
