Microsystems Unit

The mission of the Microsystems unit is to enable competitive advantage to various industrial sectors in developing smart systems. These include micro and nanosystems featuring intelligence and additional functionalities. Smart systems typically are sensors and/or actuators with an ability to process data, diagnose complex situations, communicate with each other and be autonomous in energy use.

 

The unit supports research and innovation in key enabling technologies for miniaturisation and integration of smart systems in large-scale applications. Activities aim to provide Europe's industry with a sustainable competitive advantage and business opportunities for a broad scope of smart systems applications in telecommunications, health and well being, safety, security, automotive, manufacturing and environmental control applications. These activities are suported by EPoSS , the European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration.

The unit's research and innovation activities also include:

Micro Nano Bio Systems (MNBS) . Integrated smart systems for measurement and analysis of biological/biochemical systems. Activities are expected to add significant value to key societal challenges (e.g. health, environmental monitoring, food quality and safety) as well as to build industrial leadership that underpins innovation and growth.

Smart fabrics, interactive textiles and conformable systems . Full integration of sensing, power management, processing, and communication functions within textiles for user-friendly and autonomous wearable systems in applications such as healthcare, personal protection and disaster management, sports and well being.

The coordination of ICT activities in the Green Car PPP, with focus on the objective of ICT for the Fully Electric Vehicle (FEV) . The smart systems in the electrified car allow for high energy savings in conjunction with reduced fossil fuel dependence and less environmental burden. In addition, this PPP has a wide socio-economic impact on jobs and the competitiveness of the European automotive sector.

The coordination of ICT activities in the Factories of the Future PPP . This initiative aims at helping Europe's manufacturing industry to meet increasing global consumer demand for greener, more customised and higher quality products with less waste and less consumption of energy.

Telecoms microsystems and Internet-of-Things technologies . Meeting the demands to provide wirelessly superfast broadband at lowest possible cost and providing the enabling technologies for Internet-of-Things applications and deployment.
