The evaluation of proposals submitted to the first call for the implementation of the Future Internet PPP has been completed. Proposals target issues such as massive scalability, quality of service or security. Proposers will be informed in the coming days about the outcome of the evaluation.
 The Integrated FIRE Projects invite projects and organisations to submit proposals to the Open Calls. These Open Calls are designed to stimulate the use of the FIRE Projects facilities through new innovative experiments. The grants are up to 200.000 Euros per experiment, for a total of about 5 million Euros. The proposals will be selected and funded by BonFIRE, OFELIA and TEFIS projects. BonFIRE targets the Internet of Services and Future Networks research communities. OFELIA provides a platform for experimentation of novel networking protocols, addressing schemes and applications in the Internet. TEFIS targets interdisciplinary experiments requiring usage of various testbed resources such as new network paradigms, cloud computing, advanced user interface for services. The first FIRE Open Calls information day was held in Brussels on 9 February 2011.
The report on the video games industry: "Born digital/ Grown digital – Assessing the future competitiveness of the EU video games software industry" is now available here. This study is part of the COMPLETE (Competitiveness by Leveraging Emerging Technologies Economically) project (2007-2010), financed by the European Commission Joint Research Centre's Institute for Prospective and Technological Studies (IPTS) and Directorate-General for Enterprise and Industry. It analyses the prospects of success for European ICT industries in the face of technological and market innovations in the following emerging technologies: online and mobile video games software, Web 2.0, displays (OLEDs and e-paper), RFID, emerging robotics and embedded software in the automotive sector.

Playing for Health : how videogames can help to treat diseases
ThePlaymancer project was broadcasted on Euronews. Project development team members were interviewed by a Euronews TV Channel journalist, and the outcome has been a report on the project results, activities and potential.
Playmancer also received TV coverage in the following: - A report from TF1 France on 15th February. - A report in Spanish TV3 - A report in Spanish TVE - A report in Spanish Tele 5 - A report in Spanish Antena 3 The project also received coverage from several radio stations and newspapers.
 An article about the 3DLife project was published on Greek “Kathimerini”, one of the most credible and popular daily newspapers in Greece. ITI’s scientific responsible, Dr. Petros Daras, and research associate, Mr. Lazaros Gymnopoulos, were interviewed about the 3DLife project. Dr. Daras elaborated on the relationship of the 3DLife project with the Future Internet and how it could influence the development of the later, and society in general, especially regarding the use of 3D media in everyday activities. Mr. Gymnopoulos provided information on current and future research conducted within the 3DLife Network of Excellence. The full article can be found here.

Call for papers for the 2011 International Workshop on Hot Topics in 3D Multimedia - Hot3D, July 15, 2011, Barcelona, Spain (in conjunction with ICME ’2011) Papers in all areas of 3D Multimedia are solicited. Early stage or preliminary results from potentially disruptive technology is particularly encouraged. Full papers (up to 6 pages) will be published in the ICME proceedings. Additionally, and maybe most importantly, position papers are solicited for short presentation and discussion of preliminary work or ideas. Submit a proposal of up to 2 pages, with a decision expected up to 4 weeks after submission. The Third International Workshop on Quality of Multimedia Experience - QoMEX will take place in Mechelen, Belgium on September 7-9, 2010 The call for papers closes on March 14th. The workshop aims at bringing together user-centred EC projects which develop state-of-the art methods for evaluating multimedia quality and user experience. QoMEX’11 features oral presentations, exhibits, panels and poster sessions.

EU research and innovation funding: Commission consults on radical changes to create more growth and jobs The European Commission launches a consultation on major improvements to EU research and innovation funding to make participation easier, increase scientific and economic impact and improve value for money. The proposed "Common Strategic Framework", set out in a Green Paper, would cover the current Framework Programme for Research (FP7), the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme (CIP) and the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT). Stakeholders have until 20 May 2011 to respond.

 Social Networks Overview: Current Trends and Research Challengeses This paper focuses on the research and technological measures to be adopted. It investigates online social networks as an emerging multidisciplinary research fi eld that bridges social science and multimedia computing. Results of the Workshop on 'EU Social Networks and EU R&I Programmes' At the workshop on “EU Social Networks and EU R&I Programmes” (Brussels, 26 November 2010), the European Commission welcomed the public presentation of the “Group of EU Social Networks” and the constitution of the Steering Group "EU competitiveness on the web" with representatives of all web-related industry sectors under the aegis of the European Commission. EU research and innovation funding – immediate changes to cut red tape for researchers and SMEs On January 24th 2011, the European Commission has adopted measures to make participation in the EU's current Seventh Framework Programme for Research more attractive and more accessible to the best researchers and most innovative companies, especially Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs). Based on the simplification plan unveiled by the Commission in April 2010, these measures will take effect at once.
Digital Agenda for European Film Heritage (DAEFH) - Study Following an open call for tenders, the European Commission has launched a study on "Challenges of the Digital Era for Film Heritage Institutions”. The aim of the study is to provide an input for a possible revision of the 2005 Recommendation on Film Heritage. The study started on 10 January 2011 and will last for 11 months. An on-line consultation on the preliminary finding of the study is planned at the beginning of July. A workshop to validate the results of the study is planned on 20 September 2011 in Brussels. The expected results of the study are visible here.
