The NEM Summit is an annual Conference and Exhibition organised by the NEM Initiative under the aegis of the European Commission (DG Information Society and Media).

The event, both for the conference and exhibition parts, addresses ICT at large and more specifically topics related to networked and electronic media such as:
• Media-related applications and business models
• Content creation
• Networking and delivery infrastructure
• Content search and media presentation
• Technology drivers and enabling technologies

bloc-project.jpgThe event will also include a 2000 m2 exhibition area devoted to showcases and demonstrations of research results from key European and global players in the NEM area (25 research projects will exhibit).

Art meets Science at the 2010 NEM Summit: launch of an “Electronic art contest” Art has always been a precursor of what is going to change our lives. Mixing art, science and technology will both open opportunities for artists to use NEM technologies to express their creativity and encourage researchers to push the limits of networked and media science to support artists’ creations. Networked Media and Search Systems InfoDay
Call 7 of the FP7 ICT Work Programme 2011-12 is expected to be published later in September 2010. In this context, the Commission services are organising an InfoDay specifically focused on the Objective 1.5 Networked Media and Search Systems in Brussels on Monday, 25 October 2010.
The Networked Media and Search Systems InfoDay aims at presenting the above–mentioned Objective and facilitating networking amongst the constituency in view of building quality partnerships and consortia for submission of project proposals. Click here to register!

samecontest-28.jpgbloc-ict.jpgThe European ICT project SAME (Sound And Music for Everyone, Everyday, Everywhere, Everyway) promotes a design contest for innovative applications/services/devices which make use of mobile phones for creating and enjoying music in an everyday situation. Designers are invited to make use of the new technology available through the SAME Consortium (but not exclusively). This technology enables mobile phones to be transformed into new expressive musical instruments which break the traditional ways of music listening. Submit your proposal till 30 September 2010 here.

3D4YOU won the special prize for Visual Effects at the Dimension 3 Festival in Parisfaucon.jpg
This documentary shows how peregrines survive in the city of London and how they hunt to feed their chicks; the pilot is co-produced by BBC Natural History and the 3D experts from KUK Filmproducktion GmbH in Munich. The production is funded by the EU FP7 Research Project 3D4YOU.

The currently introduced first generation of 3D television requires viewers to wear glasses in order to see the 3D effect. At the IBC in Amsterdam (Sept. 10-14) as well as the NEM summit in Barcelona (Oct. 13-15), the 3D4YOU project will demonstrate the key elements of a more advanced future 3D television system that will support both glasses-aided as well as glasses-free 3D viewing. The 3D4YOU advanced 3D data formats, containing information about the depth of objects, will also enable viewers to adjust the 3D depth effect according to their personal viewing preferences, independent of viewing distance and screen size.

cng-logo-28.pngCNG Workshop 2010 - Online Games: Economic, technological and User-Dimension - State of the art, 30 June 2010 at Gijón in Spain,
This international workshop, organized by EGDF (European Game Developers Federation) in cooperation with Gamelab, gathered relevant people from the Game Industry and the Academia to speak about current economic, technological and social trends around online games. The presentations can be downloaded here.

3D VIVANT at IBC 2010 Conference and Exhibition
A paper entitled "3D LIVE IMMERSE VIDEO-AUDIO INTERACTIVE MULTIMEDIA " has been accepted to be presented in the Technical Paper session of IBC 2010 Conference to be held in Amsterdam, Netherlands between 9-14 September 2010. In addition to this a demo based on the Holoscopic work of Brunel University, raising awareness about 3D VIVANT will be exhibited in the New Technology Section of the Exhibition.

DG Information Society and Media has launched a public consultation on key questions arising from the issue of net neutrality. All interested parties – service and content providers, consumers, businesses and researchers – are invited to respond to the consultation by 30 September 2010. The consultation will feed into a Commission report on net neutrality, which should be presented by the end of this year. More info here

Future Internet PPP Call 1 opened on 20 July '10!
After approval of the FP7 ICT work programme 2011/12 in July 2010, the Commission proceeded with the publication of the first calls, among which the first call for the Future Internet PPP (the call closes on 2 December 2010).
All call relevant documents are published here.

Countering data roaming bill shocks
One of the most successful DG INFSO policies has been the EU Roaming Regulation, which has reduced the prices for roamed calls by up to 70% since 2005. Thanks to the roaming rules Europeans benefit from cheaper prices when travelling abroad in the EU.
Since the 1st of July customers roaming in another EU Member State no longer need to worry about accidentally running up huge bills when surfing the web using mobile networks via a mobile phone or computer when abroad in the EU. More info here
