Workshop on "Broadcast driven Media in the Future Internet"

Rationale for the workshop:

Current Internet is heavily affecting the technologies and business models of the traditional broadcasting actors. The Future Internet of Media might impact on this domain even more in the years to come. Therefore, the "Networked Media Systems Unit" of the Directorate General Information Society and Media of the European Commission organises this workshop to identify the synergies between broadcasting and Future Internet of Media.

Objective:

To identify with traditional and new broadcasting actors (content stakeholders, broadcasters, telecom operators and internet actors) the future of broadcast type of media experiences in the context of Future Internet of Media (broadcasting internet).


The workshop will start with discussions on how broadcasting might benefit from the Future Internet of Media as well as how broadcasting will impact on the Future Internet of Media. These discussions will be technology oriented, leaving aside regulatory issues.


Later on, the workshop will split and focus on answering the following two questions:


- Which are the enabling technologies/components that should be part of the Future Internet of Media in order to have high-quality broadcast-driven media experiences? Which type of platform(s) is(are) needed to support broadcast-driven media experiences?


- How should broadcasting and media technologies evolve to take the full advantage of the Future Internet of Media?


Expected Output

- Identification of enabling technologies within the Future Internet of Media that will be needed for Broadcasting Internet.


- Definition of the evolution of broadcasting and media technologies to seize the full advantage of the Future Internet of Media.

10:15 Initial positioning on "how broadcasting might benefit from the Future Internet of Media and how broadcasting will impact on the Future Internet of Media".
All participants will be able to express their initial position in a 3 minutes speech, with one supporting slide that will have been sent in advance to the organiser (max. 25 presentations).
11:30 Working groups discussion on the two questions:
1. Which are the enabling technologies/components that should be part of the Future Internet of Media in order to have high quality broadcast-driven media? Which type of platform(s) is(are) needed to support broadcast-driven media?
2. How should broadcasting and media technologies evolve to take the full advantage of the Future Internet?
Participants will split into two groups. Group 1 will discuss question 1. Group 2 will discuss question 2. Flipcharts and other brainstorming materials will be used.
