The future of Internet

What are the issues?

It isn't a matter of fixing up a single issues and the Internet is then fine again. Over the last 20 years society, economy and technology evolved in many directions and new areas. Many of these evolutions created opportunities which will have to be taken into account when crafting a Future Internet.

  • Mobility – 3 billion mobile devices going online as we speak

    • This demands new and radically different services for business, leisure and travel
    • Available anytime, anywhere – soil, sea and air
  • No/low access barriers – standardisation of technology and low cost
  • Easy and safe use - More secure, more safe use and more trust – for making business, shopping or leisure – for everyone including children
  • Growth & Jobs – Today's internet is part of every business – a future Internet will have to be able to participate in every business process in service and production – As a key economic factor and a vector in globalisation it drives productivity, new business and trade.
  • Empowering the user – social networking with its wealth of user generated networking turns the Internet in a true peer-to-peer network with much more audiovisual content – how to search in this future Internet?
  • eGovernment services – office hours from 10:oo–11:3o are yesterdays – the Future Internet will enable a very different experience with public authorities and the service they offer to their citizens
  • Education – opportunity for people to grow and develop
  • Entertainment - virtual worlds in a 3D Internet for leisure, shopping and gaming.
  • More and high-volume traffic – text, voice, images, video (tinned and live)
  • A public good – who owns the Internet? – the Internet is a critical infrastructure much like electricity or water.  Global oversight, no daily politics oversight, open and fair access to the entire world.
