Foreword
The end of 2009 was marked by the evaluation of proposals we had received as a response to Objective 1.2 Call 5. At the same time we started to prepare the next Work Programme for 2010/11. A clear trend in both activities is the emergence of cloud computing. It was addressed in many proposals and is also likely to be a topic for the next Work Programme. Major trends in Cloud Computing research were presented on a well-attended public event on 26 January 2010.
Another important novelty for the Software and Services community is the Public-Private-Partnership on the Future Internet that will be launched this year. All these items (and more) are described in detail in this newsletter.
Looking forward to meet you during one of the unit's activities during 2010!

Funding opportunities on 'Internet of Services, Software and Virtualisation'
Call 5, Objective 1.2, presented an opportunity for funding research on software and services. The related page gives an overview of the target outcomes and expected impact of research in the Objective.
Objective 1.2 was the most popular Objective of the ICT call 5; it received more proposals than any other objective, namely almost 200. The process to select the proposals for funding it is still on-going. Our estimation is that 28 proposals could be finally financed. Once negotiations are finalised, you will find information on the new projects in our projects page.
At the moment, the unit is working on the next Work Programme 2011-2012, which is expected to be published in Summer 2010.
The new Work Programme is coming
FP7 ICT Work Programme 2011-2012 will be available soon.
At the moment a new Work Programme is being prepared for 2011 and 2012. It is expected to be ready by this summer and will be officially presented during the ICT event in Brussels. A new page presents the orientations of the future Work Programme in the field of Objective 1.2. This page will report the final work programme and call for proposals text as soon as it will be available.
The Future of Cloud Computing
A group of experts has worked on a report that outlines the future directions of Cloud Computing research. The findings of the final report of the group of experts and the orientations for future research in cloud computing has been presented and discussed on 26 January 2010, in Brussels.
The event attracted more than 300 participants from industry and academia worldwide. Apart from presenting the findings of the work of the experts, the aim of the event was to hear from current cloud providers about the barriers and major challenges they are facing and what needs to be done in terms of further research and policy actions. In addition, speakers from EU, Japan and the US presented cloud computing initiatives and the associated policy implications in their respective countries. The presentations and the discussions in all panels captivated the attention of the audience throughout the duration of the event. All panels converged to similar conclusions: Even though Cloud computing is a commercial reality and the adoption rate of cloud computing services is growing, there are major issues that need to be smoothed out before big businesses will truly consider moving mission-critical applications out of their firewalls. Major issues include scalability, management of data, interoperability, security and cross-border data protection. Investment in R&D on Clouds will bring benefits to the ICT industry, to other industry and commerce, to the media industry, to government and to the citizen. It also offers a greener option for ICT. Cloud Computing offers great opportunities for European businesses and Europe should put in place the right policy and regulatory framework to facilitate cloud computing take up.

Study on "Economic and social impact of Software and software based Services"
Updated version of “The European Software Industry”
An updated version of deliverable D2 “The European Software Industry” is now available. It improves the definition of ‘Software and Software-Based Services (SSBS)’ and gives an analysis of its current state, with data and forecasts for the SSBS industry. It also provides assessments of the economic and social contributions of the SSBS industry to the EU. Further updates of this deliverable will be made available during the course of the study.
In addition, a workshop “Barriers and policies for the development of the European Software and Software-Based Services” took place in Brussels on February 9. The study consortium has identified barriers, which impede a better development of the Software Industry in Europe, as well as possible policies which could be put in place to overcome these barriers. These barriers and policy actions were discussed in the workshop. Future deliverables will report on them in the next few months.

Tilburg University, University of Stuttgart and the University of Crete, all partners of the Network of Excellence S-CUBE have successfully set up an International Master study in Service Engineering (IMSE).
IMSE will start in August 2010 and is a two-year education programme designed to prepare post-graduate students with a business or Information Technology background to become the next generation of service scientists and engineers.
Aimed at the interface of software service systems and business processes, IMSE is the first international course in Europe in the field of services science – a growing discipline that aims to study and understand the growth in the service economy and its implications and to perform research and innovation in all areas of service design, implementation and provision. IMSE will be delivered at each of the three institutions and students will rotate around these sites.
Teaching will be performed in collaboration with several international institutions, including University of California at Berkeley, University of New South Wales and Tsinghua University, and international companies like ForthNet, Software AG, Accenture and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. Guest lecturers from these affiliated partners will ensure students build on their core knowledge with first-hand experience of current research topics in service science and their practical application.
IMSE is funded by the European Community's Erasmus Mundus programme, which provides financial support for institutions and makes available scholarships and travel funds for students. For Academic Year 2010-2011, it is anticipated there will be approximately 17 IMSE scholarships available with around 8 for European candidates and 9 for non-European candidates.
