On the 1st of September I have been appointed Head of Unit of the "Software & Service Architectures and Infrastructures" research area. After the more physical layers 'microelectronics and photonics' and the 'network of the future field' this is for me a happy return to a unit in which I worked twice before. The last time was from 1999 to 2000, when the main theme of the unit was the growing importance of open source software and real time software, what is now in the embedded software area. Since then, the software field has evolved quite a bit: First into component based software engineering, service engineering and now cloud computing.
The size and complexity of software has grown tremendously and our society is even more dependent on good software systems. I hope that research that is funded in this unit on cloud computing, internet of services and advanced software engineering will help European industry to develop the software based services that Europe needs to progress in the future.
The unit is also increasingly involved in policy actions coming from the "Digital Agenda for Europe". These are related to "Interoperability and Standards". Together with other services in the Commission we should try to improve ICT standard setting, promote the use of standards in public procurement and enhance interoperability through coordination. I hope that during the next years we can make significant progress, so that barriers which are hampering the European software and service industry to develop properly will be removed or diminished.
Rainer Zimmermann, Head of Unit
Launch of Call 5 Projects!
28 new projects start contributing to the realisation of the Internet of Services
Grant agreements with 28 proposals from Call 5, Objective 1.2, are now signed or close to signature. Some of the projects have already started before Summer, but the majority plans to start right after the Summer break.
The 28 projects and an additional project from call 4 are described in a new FP7 Project Portfolio brochure. This booklet contains factsheets of these 29 projects and will be printed by the end of September. The factsheets of individual projects can also be found at the call 5 project page.
All new projects and ongoing FP6 and FP7 projects will participate in the next Collaboration Meeting, 19-20 October 2010. A specific objective of the Collaboration Meeting will be to give the newly starting projects the opportunity to understand the most important results of the already running projects and collaboration working groups in order to facilitate reuse of these results.
Work Programme 2011/12 published
The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Work Programme 2011-2012 has been published; full text is available here. Please check the objective specific page for an overview of target outcomes and expected impact of Objective 1.2.
On page http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/workprogramme-2011-12-orientations_en.html#process you can find information about the consultation process that took place during 2010 with industry and academia to identify the Work Programme research priorities. The title of Objective 1.2 has been changed to "Cloud Computing, Internet of Services and Advanced Software Engineering" to reflect the orientations emerging from the consultation process. Many new and exciting topics have been included, with a main focus on technologies specific to the networked, distributed dimension of software and access to services and data.
Objective 1.2 will be part of Call 8, with a planned opening date 26 July 2011 and deadline 17 January 2012. If you would like to participate as expert for the evaluation of received proposals, please register via Cordis.

● Smart Infrastructures
● Experimentation
● Migration
● Linked Open Data
● Privacy & Citizenship
● Can the cloud be trusted?
● Information as economic good
● Smart Cities
● Scenarios for Future Internet Business
Their programme will be on-line soon at www.fi-ghent.eu.
A novelty of FIA Ghent will be a demonstration session. By joining up with ServiceWave and FIRE, a unique demonstration track will be organised in the evening of 15 December.

Study "Economic and social impact of Software and software based Services"
Final report available soon!
As it was announced in a previous edition of this newsletter, this unit launched about one year and a half ago a study called "Economic and social impact of the Software and Software Based Service industry in Europe". This study has now reached its end and the final report is going to be published on our web site soon. The reports contain a very detailed analysis of the current situation in Europe both from the market and the industry point of view, as well as the projections in time of different scenarios, including Cloud Computing, Mobility, Open Source and Outsourcing/Off-Shore development. Recommendations are made to the Commission for a strategy to help and support the European software industry to become more competitive in a growing market.
Please watch out http://cordis.europa.eu/fp7/ict/ssai/study-sw-2009_en.html for the updates!
