The European Commission, DG Information Society and Media
organised the conference
Information and Communication Technologies for Energy Efficiency
Thursday 31 January 2008
14.00 - 18.00 (registration from 13.30)
European Commission - Charlemagne Building - Room S2
Brussels, Rue de la Loi 170

Description and objectives:
Access to secure and affordable energy is fundamental not only to economic growth but also to the daily lives of every European citizen. ICT is already a major force beyond the ongoing improvements in energy efficiency. On contrast, application and governance of information and communication technology, in use in other sectors of industry for decades now, is still in its infancy in the energy sector today.
This is a challenge as Energy and ICT sectors are diverse and distinct in their approaches and even the timelines for investment are quite contrasting; but there is an enormous potential to improve energy efficiency via ICT through a concerted and coordinated multidisciplinary approach.
Therefore, this event aims at:
- bringing together the ICT and the Energy sectors' stakeholders, citizens associations, businesses and public authorities to achieve the objective of improving energy efficiency across the economy, creating a synergetic effect;
- highlighting the potential of ICT for improving energy efficiency towards span awareness raising, exchanging of best practices and promoting take-up, etc; and
- opening a debate on enhancing RTD into an initial limited number of targeted actions that could already start to bear fruit in the short term within the most promising application areas â?? namely the power grid, smart buildings and the ICT sector itself.
We look forward to the participation of some 120 Energy and ICT sector stakeholders, including leading personalities from the research institutions, senior managers from Europe's leading companies and practitioners from all parts of both sectors as well as members of the European Parliament, the European Commission and Member State's authorities.
