Learning and knowledge management
One part of technology-enhanced learning research focuses on new approaches to workplace-based learning and explores synergies between learning systems and knowledge management systems. This includes the objective of competence building, where competencies are seen as the key bridge between the needs of the learner and those of the organisation. The research teams working in this field are testing component infrastructures in various organisational settings, focusing on the interactions between learners and on capturing (tacit) knowledge in associative networks, or on the interactions with business processes and competency models.
Projects
- APOSDLE - Advanced Process-Oriented Self-Directed Learning Environment
- The goal of this project is to increase knowledge worker productivity by supporting informal learning and teaching activities in the context of knowledge workers' everyday work processes. Starting from demonstrating and evaluating the benefits of seamless integration of learning, teaching and working in the professional workplace, APOSDLE will result in a methodology and reference architecture for workplace learning that enhances the learning processes for both the individual and the organisation.

- idSPACE - Tooling of and Training for Collaborative, Distributed Product Innovation
- The idSPACE platform will improve collaborative creative learning processes and innovation by providing teams with tools for articulating, communicating and processing new ideas in product design.

IntelLeo - Intelligent Learning Extended Organisation
- An Intelligent Learning Extended Organisation (IntelLEO) is a new paradigm representing a temporal integration of different business and educational communities and organisational cultures. The project will explore how the responsiveness of the learning and knowledge building environments in an IntelLEO can be enhanced by intelligent technologies that manage collaborative activities, access to shared content and the harmonisation of individual and organisational objectives.

KP-Lab - Developing Knowledge-Practices Laboratory
- Outcome of this project will be a collaborative environment that facilitates sustained working for creating and advancing knowledge, jointly reflecting on it, and making knowledge practices visible. Development work builds on a theoretical framework for knowledge creation that looks at learning from three perspectives: individual knowledge acquisition, participation in groups of professionals, and social practices around shared knowledge artefacts.

- LTfLL - Language Technologies for Lifelong Learning
- This project will provide (semi-)automatic services for feedback that require no or very limited tutor-based support and are able to analyse interactions between students and textual output. A knowledge sharing infrastructure (combining domain ontologies and social tagging) will allow for comparing and exchanging of individual knowledge, leading to new common knowledge. The project will make extensive use of language technologies to situate the learners in their domain.

- MATURE - Continuous Social Learning in Knowledge Networks
- MATURE conceives individual learning processes to be interlinked in a knowledge-maturing process. The goals of the project are to understand this maturing process better, and to build tools and services to reduce maturing barriers, and to embed learning more seamlessly in work processes and knowledge management systems.

- PROLEARN - Network of Excellence Professional Learning
- The PROLEARN Network of Excellence has integrated the key areas of research relevant to professional learning in SMEs and larger companies. It aimed at bridging the gap between research and education at universities and learning at the workplace.

- PROLIX - Process-oriented Learning and Information eXchange
- The overall objective of PROLIX is to align learning with business processes in order to enable organisations to faster improve the competencies of their employees according to continuous changes of work requirements. The solution to be developed integrates a number of technologies such as user modelling, models and workflows for competence building, simulations, and games into a reference architecture for process-oriented learning and information exchange. Three test beds in different fields of application will demonstrate the concept of the project: a governmental social care institute, a telecom organisation and educational publishing houses.

- TARGET - Transformative, Adaptive, Responsive and Engaging Environment
- TARGET will develop a responsive learning system with serious games at its core, that presents the learner with complex situations and results in experiences that are gradually honed into knowledge.

- TENCompetence - Integrated Project TENCompetence - Building the European Network for Lifelong Competence Development
- TENCompetence aims at supporting individuals, groups and organisations in lifelong competence development, embracing primary, secondary and higher education, professional training and informal learning. RTD activities intend to further develop and integrate models and tools for the creation, storage and exchange of knowledge resources, learning activities and units of learning, competence development programmes and social exchange mechanisms to stimulate the exchange, sharing and support between the individuals, teams and organisations. Result of the project will be an infrastructure for 'learning networks', consisting of individuals, teams and organisations actively involved in the various occupations and domains of knowledge: learners, educational institutes, libraries, publishers, domain specific vendors, employers, associations, and others who deliver services or products related to learning.
