4.1. Support for new ideas and progress in the technology race.

An important part of the European Commission's budget is devoted to encouraging R&D, and in particular the exploitation of new technology resulting from scientific research. These resources allow research to move faster, and help European businesses to get ahead of world competition. European support also ensures that research efforts are not wasted - European researchers work together instead of duplicating the same work in different parts of Europe.
