Clusters of Interest Within the SII Chain

Image

Objectives

To achieve consensus amongst all ACTS projects active in the field of interactive multimedia services.

To identify and foster co-operation and joint activities, specifically to:

  • exchange information on specifications, applications, and results
  • pursue the interoperability of equipment and services
  • harmonise trials
  • promote joint experiments

To create a forum for CATV and telecom operators that can foster the introduction of interactive and conversational broadband services over their networks.
To study the implications for service providers, of using different networks for audio-visual programme distribution.
To identify and promote co-ordinated actions towards the standardisation bodies and external fora.

Figure 6.4.3: Clusters of interest within the SII Chain

The Interactive Multimedia Services chain will be particularly relevant to DAVIC, DVB, the ATM Forum and TINA-C, as well as ETSI, ITU-T and CEN/CENELEC. It will inform such bodies of issues, suggestions and feedback from the results of Projects' experiments, while at the same time keeping ACTS projects well informed on developments related to their current work. The Chain draws heavily on the work of individual clusters of activities (Figure 6.4.3), and serves to link together the results of those clusters, towards the objectives stated. Most significantly, this chain draws heavily on results of the Broadband Access group of chains, for matters related to the economics and technological convergence of access networks.

Target Recipients

DAVIC, DVB, the ATM Forum, TINA-C, ETSI, ITU-T and CEN/CENELEC, regulators, network operators, service providers, service brokers, European Cable Operators (through ECCA, APEC), manufacturers.

Expected Results

Following guidelines have been issued and disseminated to the wider ACTS community for their endorsement:

  • Guideline SII-G3: Multimedia in the Context of the Evolution Towards B-ISDN
  • Guideline SII-G4: Residential Users Expectations, Requirements and Characteristics
  • Guideline SII-G5: Internet in the Multimedia Scenario

All of the following guidelines are under development and need additional contributions.

  • Guideline SII-G1: State of Art and Evolution of Relevant Standards (The guideline SII-G2 has been divided into three as follows:)

    • Guideline SII-G2.1: Terminals
    • Guideline SII-G2.2: Interactivity Support on Alternative Delivery Platforms
    • Guideline SII-G2.3: Comparison between DVB/DAVIC

In the coming period, work will begin on new guidelines whose provisional titles are:

  • Guideline SII-G6: Interoperability for Multimedia Services
  • Guideline SII-G7: TINA Concepts for multimedia
  • Guideline SII-G8: User Aspects for Mobility
  • Guideline SII-G9: Electronic Commerce
  • Guideline SII-G10: Provision of Internet Services through Networks

All guidelines will be supported by:

  • Baseline documents
  • Open Workshops and Conferences jointly organised for a wider dissemination of results obtained within a chain.
  • Co-ordinated actions towards standardisation bodies, relevant groups of interest and other fora, as listed above.

Output/End Date

The first issue of baseline documents was made available in June 1997.
Guidelines G3, G4, G5 are issued in version November 1996 for endorsement.
