The Sixth Framework Programme places a strong focus on innovation, in the light of the Lisbon goal to build the world’s most dynamic and competitive knowledge-based economy in Europe. The Programme concentrates on seven thematic priorities in order to mobilise research effort around strategic areas where Europe can achieve world-class excellence and critical mass.

Participation in these research activities is ensured through different instruments, among which are the 'new' Integrated Projects and Networks of Excellence. All instruments containing a research and development component are however required to place a special emphasis on innovation-related activities. Innovation issues must be addressed in the project proposal, and they are also taken into account during the evaluation stage and the project's implementation.
