7th Framework programme
FP7, the EU's chief instrument for funding scientific research and technological development over the period 2007 to 2013, is one of the most important elements in realising the Lisbon agenda for growth and competitiveness. The Commission's proposals for the Seventh Framework Programme, published 6 April 2005, will now go through the co-decision procedure for approval and adoption by the European Parliament and Council.

ICT - Information and Communication Technologies
- Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are critical to improve the competitiveness of European industry and to meet the demands of its society and economy.
- ICTs have a catalytic impact in three key areas:
- - productivity and innovation, by facilitating creativity and management;
- - modernisation of public services, such as health, education and transport;
- - advances in science and technology, by supporting cooperation and access to information.

6th Framework programme
The Treaty establishing the European Community (part 3, title XVIII, art. 166, pag. 114) provides for the creation of multiannual RTD programmes. In the context of the 6th Framework Program (FP6), that covers the period 2002-2006, a number of R&D projects are partially funded by the European Union (EU). The projects are the result of an open call for proposals issued the European Commission and a peer review process carried out by independent experts. At this moment a number of projects in the areas of Networked AV systems and home platforms are contracted as a result of the 1st call for proposals of the IST program that was announced and closed on 17/12/2002 and 24/04/2003 respectively.
