Next generation micro- and nano-technologies
Objectives
Micro-technologies include device technologies such as those used for MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical-systems) and MOEMS (micro-opto-electro-mechanical-systems), microsystems engineering and micro-machining technologies, micro-sensors and actuators, micro-fluidics, micro-robotics, and related techniques, e.g. for bio chips, chemical and gas sensing based on microsystems. This theme deals with specific applied research and design competence as well as packaging solutions in order to enable integration into products providing globally miniaturised solutions. This includes interfacing or manifolding from the micro-scale to the real world.
Nano-technologies require the ability to work at molecular level and to combine different scientific disciplines to create structures with fundamentally new organisation, properties or processes, which can be used to create new devices or can be integrated to improve functionality of macro-systems.
The work undertaken by these projects also relates to the more technology related work on micro-technologies supported by the IST Programme as well as to work addressed in Future and Emerging technologies (FET) in the "Nanotechnology Information Devices Initiative". It is also complementary to activities in the FP5 Growth Programme (see also cordis.europa.eu/nanotechnology).
