Accessing and preserving audio-visual objects and films
Research under the 6th Framework Programme (2002-2006)
- PRESTOSPACE - Preservation towards Storage and Access. Standardised Practices for Audiovisual Contents Archiving in Europe (Integrated Project).
A wealth of historical, cultural and commercial assets produced with the audiovisual technologies of the 20th century are today at risk of loss within the next 20 years, due to either media deterioration or equipment obsolescence. PRESTOSPACE is developing methodologies and technologies to accelerate preservation and to reduce its cost. R&D work addresses issues such as digitisation, quality restoration, metadata extraction, storage, network bandwidth, secure interaction, rights management and effective delivery systems for end-users in the commercial and non-profit sector. PRESTOSPACE has obtained wide recognition by the different communities concerned by audiovisual preservation.
Previous research
Under the Fifth Framework Programme (1998-2002), research in this field aimed at:
- making it easier to access, preserve, manage and re-use assets from European broadcast and film archives,
- making historical film collections available,
- creating tools for restoring damaged film material to broadcast quality,
- improving the workflow in large video and film archives,
- creating new business models based upon new services for Europe's film and video collections, thus helping to safeguard the European film heritage.
This research was carried out through projects such as BRAVA, COLLATE, ECHO, PRESTO and the FIRST network of European film collections. More information on these projects is available from the projects page of this website.
