The Disappearing Computer II
Filling the "gaps" in disappearing computer initiative
The evaluation of disappearing computer proposals took place in June 2000.
Following the evaluation, 16 proposals were proposed for funding.
A document describing the objectives of the disappearing computer initiative can be found here.
The selected proposals cover a range of relevant areas, and the 3 objectives of the call are covered, albeit not in an entirely even manner. In some cases some 'gaps' can be identified. In other cases it is felt that some areas could be further strengthened with alternative approaches.
The strengthening of areas or the filling of gaps could be carried out with new research projects. Projects covering such areas may be submitted to the FET-OPEN scheme, and if selected for funding, could be included into the grouping of dc projects. A description of the FET-OPEN scheme can be found here. It goes without saying that proposals submitted to the open scheme would be competing with projects in entirely different areas. Filling an understood gap, however, does give a proposal a natural edge.
What follows is a description of what we are funding and some of the gaps that exist. Clearly the topics listed are not exhaustive and only represent an overall view. It is hoped that this description may be of use to future proposers.
- What we have
- research topics of funded projects
- list of funded projects & abstracts
- The gaps
- we do not have many projects touching these topics, and we should have some more
What we have (i.e. research topics of funded projects)
Technological core
- An open and reconfigurable wireless architecture for wearable artefacts
- Techniques for grouping sensor, perception and communication hardware into 'integrated tags' that can be attached onto everyday objects
- An open architecture that allows artefacts to be constructed and combined
- Neural network approaches for the adaptation of artefact behaviour
Techniques for integrating IT with materials
- Create new computing fibers to be woven into fabrics
- Augment ordinary paper with digital information using 'electronic inks'
Constructing environments of artefacts
- Augment everyday rooms with new affordances and 'narrative structures' to support interaction and collaboration
- Develop models and languages to support humans moving in physical spaces and maximise information flow
People-centred core
- Co-designing artefacts and new home environments with families
- Designing new forms of 'intimate' media
- Developing and evaluating 'mixed reality' artefacts in public places
The "Gaps" (i.e. we do not have many projects touching these topics, and we should have some more)
More techniques for augmenting everyday objects
- Techniques for coating or inter-weaving with existing materials
- The use of organic materials with electronic properties that could be moulded or merged with everyday objects.
- Holographic representations of artefacts
The design of collections of interacting artefacts
- Methods to 'engineer' emergent behaviour; e.g. what are the possible control parameters?
- How to 're-think' design when objects should have pre-defined as well as unpredictable uses
- Applying and learning lessons from complex systems, collective behaviour, multi-agents systems...
Considerations of privacy and ethics
- A range of issues need to be explored, for example:
- the new technologies may invade privacy
- intent: people need to know they are participating in environments that otherwise may be ' invisible'...
- Ideas on how to set up a 'think group' that could interact with and 'guide' projects on such issues
