IST Call 5 Preparatory Workshop on "Advanced Grid Technologies, Systems & Services"

Date: 31 January - 1 February 2005
Location: Hotel Carrefour de l'Europe, Grasmarkt 110, B-1000 Brussels

Parallel session on "Early Pilots"
Tuesday February 1st 2005

Session organiser: Annalisa Bogliolo

Abstract

Grid technologies, though considered as very promising, are still not well exploited by industry at large. As for all leading-edge technologies, problems preventing adoption can be found either in the insufficient number of reference business cases to convince potential users, or in the lack of understanding of the specific steps to be carried out for adapting existing Grid technologies to diverse sectors of activities, or in a lack of maturity or robustness which have not been sufficiently investigated yet. In order to increase the community of early adopters, and to foster Grid technology adoption by broader user communities all relevant levels of the value chain in the context of Grid-enabled applications and services for business and industry must be mobilised.

This session aims at discussing the main hurdles preventing a wider use of available Grid technologies within industry at large, and within SMEs in particular, and how Grid-pilots could be set-up to stimulate faster take-up of Grid technologies, and in particular of technologies developed in Europe. The potential roles in such pilots of infrastructure providers, Grid-middleware and application technology providers, service providers at all levels of the value chain and users will be discussed in the context of the overall objective of increasing competitiveness of industry in Europe.

Besides these organisations, representatives of technology transfer centres, Grid technologies competence centres, organisations able to act as multipliers, industrial sectors associations, etc. are encouraged to participate.
