IST 2003 Conference (Grid-related events in the Conference Programme)
Date: 2-4 October 2003
Location: Milan, Italy
Grid technology was comprehensively covered at the IST 2003 conference held in Milan, Oct 2003. The spotlighted topic "Harnessing computing and knowledge resources" - a track consisting of a keynote speech and six workshops - addressed not only aspects Grid research but also new applications scenarios, research infrastructures and policy issues. Furthermore the exhibition at the conference hosted the "European Grid Village", an exhibit comprising numerous ongoing Grid projects. Further details are provided below on the keynote speech and 6 workshops, including links to each workshop report.
- Keynote speech: "Grid: the third wave of internet?"
- The Keynote speech was given by Dr John Taylor (Director General of Research Councils, Department of Trade and Industry, Office of Science and Technology). Dr Taylor's presentation focused on the work that has been undertaken in the UK eScience programme and described a vision where Grids have become a truly pervasive information utility supporting a broad set of applications, with many potential benefits for citizens, enterprises and government service.
- Workshop: "Grid @ the Frontiers"
- This workshop consisted of four presentations addressing the main challenges of Grid research from different perspectives. Presentations were given by: Dr. Foster (CERN), Prof. Marco Vanneschi (University of Pisa), Dr. David Snelling (Fujitsu Labs Europe) and Prof. Manuel Hermenegildo (University Polytechnic of Madrid and member if ISTAG). Collectively their presentations - and the subsequent discussions - underlined the need to focus on Grid architectures, programming environments, composition and orchestration of services, on-demand downloading of components.
- Workshop: "Shaping EU leadership in Grid research through the ERA"
- This workshop covered key policy issues related to Grid and the European Research Area, including the need to develop a coherent strategy for collaboration among National and European Union initiatives to achieve higher impact at the European and International levels. Contributions were provided by David Williams (CERN), Wolfgang Boch (European Commission), Joachim Schaper (SAP and ISTAG), Philippe Bricard (IBM), Volker Rieke (German Ministry of Research), Bob Hertzberger's (University of Amsterdam) and Tony Hey (UK eScience programme and ISTAG).
- Workshop: "Grid economy and business models"
- This workshop addressed cross-domain issues related to the creation and management of Grid-enabled virtual enterprises, business models for Grid services, Grid economies and market mechanisms for eBusiness co-operation. Contributions were provided by Rajkumar Buyya (University of Melbourne), Steven Newhouse (Imperial College), Andrea Nicolai (T6 and member of ISTAG) and Marko Seppä (Tampere University of Technology).
- Workshop: "Delivering the Grid to industry"
- This workshop addressed a key question that the Grid community is facing nowadays: will the Grid evolve from an enabler of eScience to a new business tool with the power to revolutionise business and industrial processes? Contributions were provided by Francis Wray (EPCC, session chair), Michel Teyssedre (IBM), Joan Masso (Gridsystems), Alfred Geiger (T-systems) and Derek Sweeney (IDAC).
- Other workshops
- Other workshops that formed part of the spotlighted topic "Harnessing computing and knowledge resources" were Research Infrastructures and Grid Deployment and Emerging Grid Applications.
