Some background information for "2.4.11 Integrated Biomedical Informatics for Health"
(see page 28-29 of the WP 2005-2006)

The main objective of the call is to gain more knowledge by integrating relevant data, information and knowledge across many different levels about a disease or a patient's condition. This integration can be the basis for further research or the basis for new approaches to disease prevention and patient care (diagnosis, treatment).

Particular emphasis is given in the call text to "vertical" integration across many different levels (molecular, cellular, tissue, organ, individual and population), for example, linking genetic and clinical or epidemiological data, information or knowledge.

The call aims at obtaining added value by fostering closer collaboration between the mostly separate research communities such as those involved in genomics and proteomics research with those involved clinical research and epidemiology.

"Horizontal" integration of information within one or two levels, for example, traditional integration of clinical information systems into electronic medical record within a hospital or region, is not necessarily out of scope. Nevertheless the relevance to the call will be lower than those proposals addressing vertical integration over many levels (see the evaluation criteria in the guide for proposers).

Finally, please note that this call is less about technological development and system integration, such as the wearable and implantable systems that were addressed in call 1 and the recent joint call on biosensors, and more about the integration of information achieved potentially by such (or other) systems.
